Cats were very important to the ancient Egyptians – they were considered sacred and often buried and mummified in their own right. The goddess Bastet, daughter of the sun god and a protector of mothers, was often represented in cat form. Bastet was particularly popular in Egypt’s Late Period (661–332 BC) when this life-size bronze sculpture was made. It has gold ear and nose rings and a silver collar.
