Michelangelo was known as ‘il divino’ – the divine one. This is a chalk study for Adam from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, dating to 1511. Michelangelo was asked to paint the 40-metre-long ceiling by the Pope, even though he hadn’t painted a fresco for 20 years. Incredibly, he worked largely on his own, without natural light and standing on scaffolding nearly 20 metres above the floor!
