In her multimedia installation, “Safe #1–4,” Adrian Piper tackles the multifaceted and delicate subject of race. Affixed to the corners of the room are four enlarged images featuring smiling African and African-Americans from magazines, each overprinted with a red text: “We are among you,” “We are around you,” “We are within you,” “You are safe.”

An audio recording of the artist performing a viewer’s reaction to the piece fills the space, “I’m sorry, I just don’t feel comfortable with this. I mean, of course, I appreciate the artist’s good intentions. I really do. But I am just having a lot of trouble with this piece,” effectively integrating the work's reception into the installation itself. Exhibition co-curator Christophe Cherix notes "Piper’s work makes no concessions either to its audience or to its subjects. ‘Safe #1-4’ is a transformative experience. You’ll leave it a different person than you entered it." #AdrianPiper
