'Embroidery as a medium requires an unusual approach to composition and process. Unlike painting, where the background and sky is often applied first with foreground detail as final touches, I tend to start with foreground detail – e.g. leaves and branches – finishing with the deep background such as sky. This means that stitches for the background can be kept short, helping the threads lay flat and remain in place.
Like in Monet’s Thames series, Minninglow Beeches depicts the same stand of beech trees as in Minninglow Beeches, Autumn but a year previous, in the differing seasonal light of spring.’ – Alison Wake
