The red siskin is endangered largely due to the pet trade and habitat loss. Animal keepers at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute are creating a breeding program for red siskins and will eventually reintroduce them to the wild.
In the meantime, they are learning all they can about the species. That ranges from developing the best diet to caring for chicks.
