Women earned some pretty big—and small—victories in what has been a problematic year in many ways. We’re counting down to 2018 by celebrating some of those major moments. “The power dynamic that leads to sexual harassment is so ingrained in our culture that women have been forced to silently carry the burden and shame of their encounters for years. The lack of conversation about this issue is, obviously, dangerous: It not only under-represents the sizable number of women affected by sexual violence, but it empowers people like Harvey Weinstein, who preyed on victims for decades without retribution. But #MeToo is changing that. The social media movement, which originated with activist Tarana Burke more than ten years ago, was re-ignited by actress Alyssa Milano in the wake of the Weinstein scandal, and hundreds of thousands of women shared their own sexual harassment and assault stories, giving some real perspective to the enormity of this issue and empowering women to support one another.”—@jenaeholloway.
