As expressions of style and status, netsuke were produced in a huge variety of forms in the sophisticated 18th century city of Edo (modern-day Tokyo). The intricate kimono toggles were often carved from wood, although they were made from other materials too. Much like European fob watches and cufflinks, they revealed the sartorial taste of the wearer.
