A little lock of hair is found in this First Lady's locket. With 16 onyx or jet stones, it was worn by Jane Pierce, who was first lady from 1853 to 1857. Mrs. Pierce never wanted to be a political wife. She doted on her son Benny, her only child to survive infancy. Tragically, he was killed in a train accident shortly before President Franklin Pierce's inauguration. Jane Pierce spent the rest of her life in mourning.

During the second year of mourning, jewelry was permitted. We don't know whose hair was in Jane's locket but we suspect it belonged to Benny.
First Families have had their causes for mourning and understanding their traditions, customs, and keepsakes can help us make sense of death and mourning in American history. Take a look at mourning jewelry and accessories used by Julia Grant and Mary Lincoln on our blog: s.si.edu/mourningpres (Link in profile.) And stay tuned to see other ways in which families and the public have memorialized presidents who have passed.
