Calling in the cavalry to solve your pig problems? If your hogs were facing hog cholera in the 19th century, you might be losing millions of dollars per year to the disease. Before the viral nature of hog cholera was understood, purported cure-alls like Sheridan's Cavalry Condition Powder promised to treat everything that might ail an animal. "To be used freely," it proclaimed, for everything from "loss of appetite" to "roughness of hair" to "bots and heaves." As colorful as it was, it didn't do the trick. ???? The first effective serum treatment was developed in 1906 (this bottle of Scweine-Pest-Serum in our second photo is from around 1910), helping to save the pork industry worldwide. Our third photo: a 1954 serum from Lederle Laboratories. ? Find out more about how scientists made sure we could keep bringing home the bacon on our blog: s.si.edu/healthyhogs (Click the link in our profile.) ???? We're going hog wild with medical history this #AntibodiesWeek.
