“Outrageously magical things happen when you mess around with a symbol.” -David Hammons
...
Charles White taught drawing in Los Angeles from the mid-1960s until the end of his life, and mentored a generation of students. Among them is #DavidHammons, who studied with White early in his career, and curated our “Charles White—Leonardo da Vinci.” #MoMAArtistsChoice exhibition. Looking back over Hammons’s career, one MoMA curator notes, “Hammons has created a vocabulary of symbols from everyday life and messed around with them...Many of the results have indeed been outrageous, and most all of them have had a distinct kind of magic.” mo.ma/2xyP06z
