No fancy liqueur flask, this held spit. Sputum flasks, like this one from the 1900s, offered patients with tuberculosis (TB) a discreet and sanitary alternative to a handkerchief. ?
TB typically affects the lungs, causing the sufferer to produce large amounts of thick and sometimes bloody mucus. Before antibiotic cures became available in the 1940s, those suspected of suffering from TB might be ostracized, ridiculed, or denied certain civil rights. Spitting quietly into a flask provided a way to dispose of phlegm without drawing attention.
