Every time a humpback whale breaches, the sound travels between 10-15 miles across the sea. Because of this, we theorize they breach to communicate with other whales in the area. More often than not, if one whale breaches towards the horizon, some whales nearby will breach a few seconds later, which seems to be a response. This is just one of the many theories as to why these ocean giants fly out of the water!
