In recent years, artist @frostjeff has watched as fires raged across the West Coast with increasing frequency and intensity. “Fire is a natural part of nature,” he tells TIME, “but [here's] what you’ll hear veteran firefighters say over and over: ‘I’ve never seen fire behavior like this.” This month, Frost, based near Joshua Tree National Park, has been chasing blazes in Sonoma and Napa that have scorched thousands of acres. On scene, as he did this week with the blazes in Northern California, Frost shoots sequences of hundreds of still photos and then combines them into a time-lapse video. The Wine Country Fires have left at least 35 people dead and destroyed 5,700 homes and businesses, the Associated Press reports, making them the deadliest and most destructive series of wildfires the state has ever seen.
