Looking back at us this #pollinatormonday with its yellow “eyes” is an African Moon moth from @theomahazoo. Found widely in Eastern and Southern Africa, this moth is a master of deception. In addition to its intimidating “eye” markings, the African Moon moth’s green and grey wings give it it the appearance of foliage, which allows it to blend in with the bushes and shrubs of its natural habitat. It’s second pair of lower wings have slender tail-like structures resembling dried pieces of twigs, helping it to more closely match the surroundings of the the brushy areas of the subtropical regions of Southern Africa. These long tails spin behind the moth as it flies, and create echoes sounding similar to wing-beats. When hungry bats point their sonar at flying African Moon moths, the echoes created by its tail will confuse the bat into thinking the moth is much larger than it is, often causing the bat to fumble its attack, and sometimes dissuading it entirely. This deception often allows the African Moon moth to live, and pollinate another day!
