Louise Bourgeois began “Sainte Sébastienne” soon after her return to printmaking in the late 1980’s, and its ensuing states of evolution offer a unique view of her creative process. The work’s numerous stages comprise some 36 states and variants in all. According to the artist, the urgent metamorphosis reflects her reactions to perceived outside antagonisms.
