This super photo of an Assyrian winged lion was taken by @ichliebedieschweiz. Standing over 3 metres tall, this sculpture once guarded an entrance to King Ashurnasirpal II’s North-West Palace in the ancient city of Nimrud (in modern-day Iraq). It was made around 860 BC and was carved with five legs so it can be seen standing firm from the front, or striding forwards from the side. It was part of a pair – the other is now @メトロポリタン美術館. You can see this and amazing carved reliefs from the same palace in Rooms 7 and 8.
