Fine gold plaques like this were probably used to decorate pieces of furniture in ancient Egypt – this one was made around 1800 BC. The scene shows the Pharaoh Amenemhat IV offering a vase of ointment to Atum, god of the setting sun. It was made using a technique called 'ajouré' where the design is cut out of sheet metal using a chisel to punch around the outline – Egyptian craftspeople did not have scissors or fine saws. #AncientEgypt #Egypt #AncientHistory #gold
