This striking turquoise mask is from Mexico and was made around 500 years ago. It likely depicts Xiuhtecuhtli, the Aztec god of fire. His name means ‘Turquoise Lord’, and this mask is made out of tiny pieces of the semi-precious stone mounted on wood. Masks of Aztec deities were probably worn by impersonators to enact scenes from stories. Butterflies are associated with Xiuhtecuhtli, and it’s been suggested that the darker pieces of turquoise on the cheeks and forehead form the shape of a butterfly.
