Made in the late 19th century, these eyes represent an early stage in the development of prosthetic eyes and add to the Museum’s medical collection.⠀

The heavy and uncomfortable original glass eyes made by late 16th century Venetians were replaced in 1835 by German eyeball-makers following the invention of a vaguely eyeball-coloured form of glass called cryolite. ⠀
