You may know that this is a laryngoscope, designed to inspect the larynx. However, did you know that Spanish singer and music educator Manual Patricio Rodríguez García invented the first laryngoscope in 1854? He is a revolutionary figure in the history of the study of the voice and was probably the first person to have observed his own vocal cords during speech production. His design was adapated and used extensively in a medical setting.
