This beautiful photograph on display at Sydney Observatory in our Winning Sky Photos 2017 exhibition shows a star-birth gas cloud commonly known as the Fighting Dragons of Ara (or NGC 6188 to astronomers). Hot, massive young stars pump out intense levels of ultraviolet light, causing the surrounding gas to glow and create fantastic shapes in clouds of gas and dust.
