Pompeii and Herculaneum weren’t the only towns overwhelmed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which is thought to have happened #onthisday in AD 79. This fragment of a wall painting was preserved in a villa in Boscoreale, a town at the foot of the volcano in the Bay of Naples. Painted in around 30 BC, the fresco shows a coastal scene of a boat departing a harbour and people waving from the shore. A fisherman can be seen on the bridge in the foreground. This panel would have been part of a larger design showing landscapes, still life, or mythological scenes.
