In 2012, the Museum employed a team of artists, taxidermists, conservators, and designers to restore the Hall of North American Mammals' specimens, install new lighting, and attend to the animals’ detailed habitats. As part of the year-long restoration, this handsome looking jack-rabbit received a special make-over. One of the biggest challenges involved painting the animal’s delicate inner ears to recreate their characteristic pink and orange glow. The team also addressed hair loss and structural damage caused when the original preparations removed the surface of their skin. Both the black-tailed and antelope jack rabbits are now on display in newly-restored environments that carefully replicate their natural Arizona habitats. How can you tell them apart? Look to their ears: antelope jack rabbits’ are larger. You can find both in the Hall of North American Mammals. #jackrabbit #diorama #amnh #taxidermy #bunnyears #desertlife #rabbit #rabbits #dioramas
