With their colorful faces, furry head crests, and impressive size, mandrills make for natural fictional fodder. Marvel Comics created a Mandrill supervillain, and the animal inspired The Lion King’s Rafiki as well. On real male mandrills you’ll notice that bright hues aren’t just present around the nose and eyes: big, colorful butts attract mates. These primates are found in the evergreen rainforests of Central West Africa, within the countries of Gabon, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo. They are omnivores---and their diet can include fruits, buds, leaves, roots, insects, fungus, and seeds. Despite their resourceful nature, they are nonetheless considered a highly vulnerable species, mostly due to habitat encroachment by their distant cousins, Homo sapiens. #mandrill #primate #amnh #vividcolor #monkey #rainforest #mandrills #monkeys #primates #naturalhistory
