This summer, should you find yourself collecting shells on the beach, take a moment to consider that most objects we refer to as “seashells” once served as the outer protective armor of an invertebrate animal. Here at the Museum, the Division of Invertebrate Zoology archives and studies a vast variety of non-vertebrate animals, which make up 95% of all animal species on Earth. The Division houses more than 24 million specimens, which comprises about 500,000 species. Included are large collections of marine and freshwater invertebrates like these shown here. Despite centuries of human exploration, the oceans are still considered to be teeming with species that are as of yet undiscovered by science, many of which are likely to be marine invertebrates. Perhaps you’ll discover a new species yourself! #shells #invertebrates #ocean #seashells #amnh #mollusk #oceanlife
