Many Fourth of July picnics will have an uninvited guest-- the species Anopheles maculipennis, otherwise known as mosquitoes.
The Museum debuted this huge model In 1917-- it's 75 times larger than life, and intended in part to educate the public about malaria and yellow fever. At the time, it was a somewhat controversial idea that the mosquito, not poor sanitation, spread the deadly disease. The Anopheles mosquito, specifically the female, is the only mosquito known to transmit human malaria. Since the model’s unveiling at the Museum, huge advances have been made in the global effort to combat malaria and to educate the public about the disease. Still prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, there are now several treatment options available, and when properly treated, people who contract malaria today can usually expect a complete recovery. #mosquito #naturalhistory #amnh #fourthofjuly
