This amazingly tiny species of frog is the Minyobates. It’s a poison dart frog, which means it belongs to the family of amphibians known as Dendrobatidae. These frogs, or Dendrobatids, are some of the most toxic animals on the planet. Some groups of indigenous people in South America have used their powerful poison for centuries to tip their blowgun darts when hunting, hence the moniker “dart frog.” The Minyobates is a species that resides solely atop the Cerro Yapacana, a mountain located within The Yapacana National Park, a protected area of the Amazon Rainforest located inside Venezuela. The mountain is a tepui or table-top mountain, a raised plateau that rises abruptly from the surrounding flat land, and it allows these remarkable amphibians to live at elevations of 600 to 1,300 meters where they spend a portion of their lives inside bromeliad plants. Due to intense open gold mining, wildfires, and other factors, the unique forest habitat atop the Cerro Yapacana is dwindling.
