Today’s commuters may relate to the #design questions raised by MoMA in 1976 with “The Taxi Project: Realistic Solutions for Today.” Curator Emilio Ambasz argued that taxis were “the unsung heroes of urban transportation,” noting that, at the time, there were 170,000 taxis in service in the US, serving 2.5 billion passengers in more than 3,400 communities nationwide. In New York City alone, taxis transported 800,000 passengers per day. Given that, Ambasz asked, how could the design community come together to produce prototypes for practical, economical solutions to taxi design that would be more energy efficient, reduce air pollution, and improve traffic congestion? The exhibition included four new working prototypes created by American manufacturers (Steam Power Systems and American Machine and Foundry) and European companies (Volvo and Volkswagen). These were exhibited with a fifth prototype developed independently by Alfa Romeo, as well as a typical London cab.
