Jennifer Jones came to Hollywood insecure and inexperienced, but soon transfixed audiences with her ability to transform on screen. When Jones was cast as the peasant girl who has visions of the Virgin Mary in “The Song of Bernadette” (1943), legend has it, producer Selznick kept her away from the film’s premiere to retain the illusion of her youth and chastity. Jones walked away with that year’s Best Actress Oscar. Another defining moment would come from her brazenly seductive role in King Vidor’s “Duel in the Sun” (1946).
