When the Museum was established in 1753, it didn’t have a physical site to display the collection. A large mansion, Montagu House, was purchased in 1755 to store and display the collection. Open to the public in 1759, the house soon became too small for the growing number of objects and visitors. By 1823 a new purpose-built museum was commissioned and Montagu House was demolished. Such a large building took a long time to complete – most of the central building you can see today was finished in 1857.
