When Sir Hans Sloane left his collection to the nation in 1753, it consisted of around 71,000 individual objects. It contained everything from books and coins to natural history specimens and ‘things relating to the customs of ancient times’. The Museum’s collection has been growing ever since, and now includes over 8 million objects! The natural history and book collections soon became far too big for one museum, and the @natural_history_museum and the @britishlibrary were established to ensure these parts of the collection were given the space they deserved.
