The workers, wearing helmets and bullet-resistant vests, have worked at night. Protesters have been kept at a distance, streetcars have sometimes stopped and traffic has been re-routed. #NewOrleans is halfway through a bitterly contested plan to remove 4 Confederate monuments from public spaces, including this statue of the general Robert E. Lee, which was photographed by @misterwidmer. Months after 9 black churchgoers were killed in a racially motivated massacre in Charleston, South Carolina, New Orleans officials declared the monuments to be nuisances. The courts ultimately allowed the removals to go forward, and the city is weighing where to display the monuments so they can be place “in their proper historical context from a dark period of American history.” But the mayor’s approach has been controversial.
