Since the first time @nytimestravel reporter @tonyperrottet visited Venice 15 years ago, he's wanted to learn to drive a topetta, the flat-bottom boat traditional to the Venetian Lagoon. The most famous sites in #Venice are packed with tourists from cruise ships, making waterways a logjam. But the Lagoon is a half-forgotten world of marshes and salt flats, home to 100 or so islands that thrived during the Renaissance as farms, military bases and monasteries. In the 20th century, though, the islands were mostly abandoned, making the top of Europe’s “most endangered” list. The @nytimestravel photographer @sw_photo took this photo of the Lagoon, where Venetians supplied @tonyperrottet with dire predictions: he would surely get lost, fall overboard, become mired in mud — much of the enormous Lagoon is only a foot deep — or collide with any number of speeding watercraft. But he was adamant. All he had to do was pass a test. How hard could it be? Visit the link in our profile to find out.
