When the members of the Grootfontein Agri College track and field team traveled from #Namibia to the United States to compete in the @pennrelays in Philadelphia, it was a first. Most of the young athletes had never been out of southern Africa, and a handful had never flown. Henk Botha, the school’s principal and shot-put and discus coach, knew the trip would be an eye-opener for students from Grootfontein. The town’s population, 25,000, is barely larger than the total number of athletes — about 18,000 competed in this year’s relays, held in April. The journey nearly ended before it began, when the main sponsor pulled out a few weeks before the team was scheduled to depart. One parent stepped in with a loan to finance the trip. But then, when the team arrived in New York after a 23-hour trip, and only days before the relays were to begin, the students found that the hostel rooms they’d reserved in Union City, New Jersey, weren’t available. While on assignment for @nytimessports, the photographer @michellegustafson followed the team’s challenging journey. She took this photo of Jaco Grobbelaar while his teammates Keenan Dickson, left, and Raymond Hummel held a pull-up competition outside the hotel where they ended up.
