We thought we knew where this endangered bird spent its winters, until GPS backpacks showed a lone male in Cuba.
For the first time ever, we've tracked one of North America’s rarest birds—the Kirtland’s warbler—all year long using tiny technology.
Scientists at our Migratory Bird Center fitted dozens of birds with mini gelocators where the Kirtland’s warbler nests in northern Michigan. The data (retrieved when the birds were recaptured the next year) tells what happened between Michigan and winters in the Bahamas.
Knowing a species’ full annual cycle helps us plan for its conservation, as migration information can be used to protect stopover areas from disturbance.
