"Andrea Bowers’s work is powerful, daring, and poignant. I admire how she addresses socio-political issues and raises a sense of collective awareness. Bowers’s work ‘A Menace to Liberty’ (2012) is currently on view in @ニューヨーク近代美術館's exhibition ‘Unfinished Conversations: New Work from the Collection.’ Using permanent marker on found cardboard, the artist recreates a cover from a 1914 issue of the journal Mother Earth, which included the anarchist Emma Goldman’s ‘Patriotism: A Menace to Liberty’ (1911). The essay, which inspired the title for Bowers’s work, outlined the inadequacies of America’s patriotic, capitalist and military ideology.
