Deep in the laboratories of the Museum is this cupboard full of bottles of the weird and wonderful – fur from a Persian lamb and an American jaguar, rock asphalt from Syria, gums from New Zealand, waxes from China and Japan, resins from Oman and pigments from India. Some of these bottles and samples are over 100 years old! Our scientists compare this stock of organic materials with the composition of objects in the collection. The reference material is tested against small samples taken from an object using high pressure liquid chromatography mass spectrometry or gas chromatography mass spectrometry to determine what it is made from, dyed with, or coated in. This can help scientists understand the condition of the materials, and help conservators determine what treatments might be needed to keep the object in the best condition.
