The statue was found in 121 pieces, lying near the pedestal it once stood on in the ancient city of Cyrene in modern-day Libya. Apollo is represented as a beardless athletic youth – the ideal of male beauty at the time. The statue was made in the 2nd century AD for the temple of Apollo, when Cyrene was part of the Roman empire.
