Swipe to see a mini gallery of this Roman statue of Venus ➡️ In ancient Rome, Venus was the goddess of love – her ancient Greek counterpart was Aphrodite. Statues of Venus/Aphrodite were placed in temples devoted to her, and their styles can tell us important things about society at the time. In the 4th century BC, Greek sculptor Praxiteles created a life-size naked statue of Aphrodite which had a big influence on later sculpture. The significance of portraying the goddess naked perhaps reflected both the rising social status of women, and changes in male attitudes towards women – previously only male statues had been naked. Based on a Greek original, this Roman sculpture has a great sense of three-dimensionality – Venus crouches down and turns her head sharply to her right, as if surprised by her audience.
