This beautifully detailed painting is from the tomb of Nebamun. A middle-ranking ‘scribe and grain accountant’, he is thought to have lived around 1350 BC and worked at the vast temple complex near Thebes where the state-god Amun was worshipped. It shows him hunting birds on a boat with his wife and young daughter. The painter has captured the vitality and variety of the Nile – the shiny scales of the fish in the water, and the plumage of the different birds in the sky.
