This beautiful dish was created by Shomura Ken, a fifth generation ceramic artist working in the town of Arita in Japan – a place famous for its long association with porcelain. His family’s kiln was created in 1884, and this piece was made in 1999. Shomura specialises in glaze effects, which transform the surface of his vessels to give a sense of movement and depth that’s uncommon in porcelain. Here we see the use of a cobalt blue tint that undulates towards the centre of the dish, creating a soft swirling effect.
