With thousands of the world’s largest honeybees droning in the background, Mauli Dhan Kulung climbs up a steep cliff face in the deep jungles of Eastern Nepal. He is in pursuit of the poisonous ‘red’ honey, known in equal measure for its medicinal properties and its value on the black markets across Asia. Without any protective equipment, Maule will spend all day suspended hundreds of feet above the ground in a swarm of angry bees. ~

Mauli’s rugged feet tell the story of how difficult life is in some of Nepal’s still-forgotten valleys. His tribe - the Kulung are one of the last truly animistic groups left in the country. They share a deep culture that is rooted in the landscape, wealthy with tradition and ritual - including the twice-annual honey harvest. ~

But as roads and technology are changing the landscape of wild places across the globe, these ancient traditions are under threat. Our team was invited to document Mauli’s very last trip to the cliffs as part of #TheLastHoneyHunter feature.
