This stunning statue in our #SunkenCities exhibition is of the Egyptian queen Arsinoe II. Discovered in the ancient lost city of Canopus, it is the perfect combination of Egyptian and Greek style. The choice of a local dark stone and her pose are Egyptian in style, but the way her flesh is carved is similar to Greek sculptural masterpieces. Arsinoe is shown here as Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty and ‘fortunate sailing’. See more incredible objects preserved and buried under the sea for over a thousand years in our unmissable exhibition, closing 27 November 2016. Follow the link in our bio to book tickets.
