This piece of painted rock art from #Zimbabwe shows a group of kudu (a type of antelope) painted with a red ochre pigment. Kudu are believed to have had a symbolic significance to the San|Bushmen of northern South Africa and Zimbabwe, where they are frequently depicted in rock art.

Rock art in southern Africa connects us to over 30,000 years of human history. Much of this art was made by the ancestors of the San|Bushmen people (a term used to describe many different hunter-gatherer-fisher groups living in southern Africa). Both 'San' and 'Bushmen' are considered offensive terms by some members of these groups, although others have positively adopted them.

You can see this piece of incredible rock art in our free display in Room 3, until 20 November 2016.

This display is supported by The Asahi Shimbun.
