This rock shelter in #Namibia is in the Brandberg, a mountainous formation on the edge of the Namib desert. The paintings show a large faded elephant, springbok and kudu antelope, zebra and many human figures. Most paintings from this area are estimated to be around 2,000–4,000 years old.

Concentrations of painting sites are found in #SouthAfrica's Drakensberg and Cederberg mountains, the Matobo Hills in #Zimbabwe, Tsodilo Hills in #Botswana and the mountains of north-west #Namibia. There are also many examples of engraved rock art in southern Africa.

It is thought that the creators of rock art in this area may have had similar beliefs and cultural practices to modern San|Bushmen people (a term used to describe many different hunter-gatherer-fisher groups living in southern Africa). Both 'San' and 'Bushmen' are considered offensive terms by some members of these groups, although others have positively adopted them.
The Museum's #AfricanRockArt project is currently cataloguing digital images of rock art from throughout southern Africa. Follow the link in our bio to find out more about the project and explore over 20,000 images now online.
