The Ma family stood outside their new 580-square-foot home in Miaomiao Lake Village, where ankle-deep sand blocks their front door and pushing a bicycle through the yard feels like wading in a bog. They are among some 7,000 Hui Muslims whom the Chinese government resettled from their water-scarce lands in the country’s northwest. Officials promised that they'd get rich, Ma Shiliang told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. But 3 years on, Shiliang, a doctor, has been unable to get a job practicing medicine or find other reliable work. “If we had known what it was like, we wouldn’t have moved here,” he said.
