#regram from @nytarchives ?? The George Washington Bridge, which stretches across the Hudson River to connect New York and New Jersey, opened 85 years ago this week. At its debut on October 24, 1931, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. But perhaps more impressive was that the #bridge opened 8 months ahead of schedule and cost considerably less than its original estimates. At its formal dedication ceremony, John F. Galvin, chairman of the Port of New York Authority, announced, “Tomorrow will start a traffic that will flow ceaselessly for generations to come.” And things certainly got off to a good start the following day. @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported that 56,312 cars and 100,000 pedestrians crossed by “pleasure car, and service car, on foot, motorcycle and roller skates, and one citizen was on a horse.” This photo from the @nytarchives captures some of those cars and pedestrians crossing the #GeorgeWashingtonBridge on its first day of service.
