A miniature #donkey can change your life. 10 miniature donkeys can change it a lot. Consider Steve Stiert, who was a software engineer at @ibm 5 years ago. A bunch of things happened — divorce, a layoff, a sort of reckoning. Now, at 57, he says, “Every day is donkey day.” Steve takes his long-eared charges to nursing homes and schools for the disabled. He also leads a @meetup group, Hudson Valley Donkey Walkers, that has amassed over 400 (human) members. “People told me, ‘If you’re having a midlife crisis, get a sports car or a boat — you can sell those later,’” Steve said. “I was like, ‘No, I love these animals.’ ” In August, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter Andy Newman and photographer @hiroko.masuike traveled a couple hours north of New York City to join 2 dozen people in Steve’s backyard, also known as Donkey Park, where @hiroko.masuike took this photo of Andy's daughter, Violet, with one of the donkeys. Note: Before you run out to shop for donkeys yourself, make sure they’re legal in your town. In NYC, the Health Code bans “odd-toed ungulates” — hoofed animals — other than domesticated horses.
