One of the best U.S. athletes that most Americans have never heard of may be hard to miss in the coming months. So here’s her name, and don’t forget it: Tatyana McFadden. Growing up on a dead-end street in suburbia, @tatyanamcfaddenusa — pictured at right — and her sister, @hannah_mcfadd, left, raced their wheelchairs. @tatyanamcfaddenusa, 27, was born with spina bifida and adopted from a Russian orphanage. She’s paralyzed from the waist down. @hannah_mcfadd, 20, was born without a femur in her left leg, and adopted from Albania. She’s an above-the-knee amputee. Both girls were raised to believe they could do anything, no matter what. “Tatyana was told by doctors at Johns Hopkins she probably wouldn’t live long, and they said Hannah would never be active,” said their mother, Debbie McFadden, who helped write the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990. At the @paralympics, which begin next week, @tatyanamcfaddenusa could become the first athlete to sweep every distance in wheelchair racing. @hannah_mcfadd is racing in 3 of the same events, including the 4x100 relay. If they finish side-by-side, they’ll be the first sisters to appear on the podium together in a @paralympics. @daniel_acker photographed the McFadden sisters while on assignment for @nytimessports.
