“It was billed as ‘the Match of the Century,’ and in many ways it was,” a @ニューヨーク・タイムズ article on September 2, 1972 declared. “Bobby Fischer, who for years has been saying he is the greatest, proved it today by becoming the chess champion of the world, the first American ever to hold the title.” The 29-year-old from Brooklyn won the title and the $156,000 victor’s share of the $250,000 purse when his opponent, Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union, didn’t show up for the game and instead called the referee to resign. The match in Reykjavic, Iceland, lasted nearly 2 months. According to @ニューヨーク・タイムズ, it was “a battle for chess supremacy that had its moments of glory and its moments of slapstick comedy.” Ultimately, though, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ wrote: “Fischer proved to be the better player. The gentlemanly Spassky was the nice guy who finished last.” The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Neal Boenzi took this photo of Bobby Fischer, left, being escorted from City Hall by John V. Lindsay, mayor of New York City at the time, after a reception in the chess champion’s honor. #tbt
